The Full Story

McNutt & The Northwest Neighborhood

McNutt and the Northwest Neighborhood are the areas in which I primarily spend my time. McNutt is where I live, where my office is, and where most of my responsibilities are focused. The other residence centers in the Northwest Neighborhood (Foster, Briscoe, and Walnut Grove) are where many of my colleagues work, and I may become involved in these areas under certain circumstances, such as when I am functioning in an on-duty capacity. Each neighborhood at IU has a specific "vibe" or energy. Unfortunately, the Northwest neighborhood has a reputation of being rowdy, disorderly, chaotic, and troublesome. Students and staff assume that the residents of this neighborhood are less focused on academics and more inclined to participate in party and/or drinking culture. While this is absolutely a generalization, which I believe negatively impacts the Northwest neighborhood, there is some validity to it. McNutt, Foster, Briscoe, and Walnut Grove tend to have high levels of alcohol-induced incidents, policy violations, and even medical transportations. These environmental factors influence how I approach my work.

McNutt Residence Center

“McNutt is the largest residence center at IU Bloomington, and after receiving comprehensive renovations in 2019, it's ready to offer residents an unbeatable residential experience. And with a brand new onsite dining hall, residents have their pick of dining options. Get ready to create the college experience you want at McNutt” (McNutt Quadrangle: Northwest Neighborhood, n.d.).

IU's Northwest Neighborhood

IU's Northwest Neighborhood is composed of four residence centers. McNutt and Foster the two largest residence centers on campus. Briscoe and Walnut Grove are smaller (but not small) and are considered "enhanced" housing options (Northwest Neighborhood: Locations, n.d.).
